"Required Curriculum": Turning Point

The POWER of how just ONE individual, group of individuals, or even ONE FAMILY going about doing good can make the world a far better place--people who have found great COURAGE to look deep into their hearts, to use their own simple, unique, God-given gifts, talents and abilities to unselfishly bless those who so desperately need those blessings!

This is what Turning Point is all about.

Our family has discovered this amazing series of programs through BYUTV (available to view anytime at BYUTV.org).  I sincerely wish it could be "required curriculum" for everyone as it would begin to transform the world overnight.

These are basically just every-day, ordinary people.  Believe me when I say it is impossible after watching a handful of these shows, to not think "Hey, maybe there is something we can do to make a difference too?"

There is just no way to put into words how wonderful these programs are! Below are a few suggestions with links (click the title) to get you started! Who knows, maybe Turning Point will come and do a show about your good works next? :-)

Whitney Elementary
This is about a woman (who was raised with her sister in the projects by a very young single mother who always emphasized education) who then grew up to become a principal in the poorest district in Las Vegas. Her life has now touched the lives of hundreds and hundreds of families in a most amazing, personal way while at the same time getting an entire community involved in serving others. Wow!!!

The Gentle Barn
This is about a woman who dreamed from the time she was 7 years old to help heal people while also healing sick animals.  She is living the beautiful dream while at the same time rescuing youth and adults from depression and other paths of destruction.  Just amazing.

Harmony Project & Free Wheelchair Mission
Oh Wow, we just watched this! This covers two amazing people:  One is a woman who now teaches free music lessons, along with other volunteers she organized, in the poorest parts of Los Angeles after watching gang members appreciate the violin playing of her 5 year olds at an outdoor fruit and vegetable market.

The other story is about an engineer who always had the goal to be very wealthy but then had a dramatic change of heart after a sermon at church.  He started volunteering as a mentor for troubled youth but finally realized his gifts lay somewhere else.  After traveling to a third world country his heart was broken by the disabled people who had to drag themselves along the streets with bleeding knees, etc.  So he put his engineering skills to use and gets up a 4 a.m. to build these simple, inexpensive wheelchairs for the poorest of the poor!

Fullmer Bros. Boxing Gym & The Erin Kimball Foundation
Wow, wow, wow!  Both of these stories take place in Utah.  The first is about several retired brother's reaching out to troubled youth on the streets through their boxing gym.  They have saved and changed many lives through their love and guidance!  The second is about a woman who had been in an abusive relationship early on in her life but was able to get out.  She met a remarried a wonderful man and the eventually began providing housing for TWO full years for woman and children in similar situations.  You will be amazed..

The Clarks & Eagle Eyes
This was the first program we ever watched on Turning Point and it is just unbelievable.  The Clarks are the parents of 21 adopted children, most of which were not wanted by anyone else because of the physical handicaps or abusive histories.  What gifted, loving, GENEROUS people they are!  Eagle Eyes is another beautiful story about how a scientist started helping the severely disabled communicate using only their eyes and some special equipment.  You will love it!!!

We all need to stop waiting for an "assignment" to do good and instead look around, look deep inside our own heart, all the while looking up to God.  He will show us the way.

And see that ye have afaith, hope, and charity, and then ye will always abound in good works.

Let your alight so shine before men, that they may see your good bworks, and cglorify your Father which is in heaven.

  3. Annie, the wonderful thing about BYUTV is that ALL their programs are available free on the internet now at www.byutv.org! I'm so happy to hear you read "The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook" and are telling others! The principles in that book are POWERFUL!
